What is Writing?

Good thinking makes better writing.

For more than twenty years, I have taught English studies and creative communication to students in secondary and post-secondary settings. Over those years, my teaching has evolved alongside the students, continually adapting to new perspectives and new ways of learning.

My teaching is grounded in curiosity, creativity, and inclusion. Every student arrives with different strengths, experiences, and ways of learning. My goal is to create a learning environment where students are challenged intellectually while feeling supported in the process of developing their skills.

A background in theatre makes my teaching style animated, responsive and interactive. A journey in education keeps me investigating innovative ways that people learn. I am a teacher-scholar.

Currently completing my doctoral dissertation in Arts Education at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, Canada, I reach for possibility-thinking. Arts Education asks the question, “In addition to conventional research, what other possibilities are there for investigating and experiencing knowledge?” My research explores the craft of writing, neurodivergence, and emerging technologies.

Being both a teacher and a researcher continually reminds me that learning is never finished. I still wrestle with drafts, revise my thinking, and work through complex ideas every day. The struggle is real.

But the struggle also makes discoveries fresh.

My deep hope for every student is that the struggle leads to strength, independence, and confidence.

When I am not preparing for my dissertation defence, you can find me perplexing over a mystery novel or film with one of my two ginger cats. Or evicting dirt from under my fingernails after gardening.
